On the pages of this blog, we deal with decorating issues (trends, inspirations, advice) and practical cases. Today, we are dealing with a practical case: that of the extendable rod. What is its principle, where and when to install it, and how to put it correctly? Will you know everything?

For classic rods in different colours and sizes and door rods, go to the rods section of our shop.

And for the curtains to place on your rod, go to our custom curtains category.

And now, let’s answer all the common questions about the extendable rod.

Good reading!

What is an extendable rod?

An extendable rod is a rod without drilling used to fix it between one wall and another, which will lock against the two walls by exerting pressure against them.

Where to put an extendable rod?

Entrance to a room

The extendable rod is used to position a curtain in the frame of a door, in place of the door, to close or hide the room with the help of a curtain.

Window

It can also be in front of a window, from one wall to another, when this window is between two walls perpendicular to the wall of the window.

Cupboard

This rod is also used to close/hide a cupboard. It is then positioned either against the walls of the cupboard itself or from one wall to the other if the cupboard occupies the entire length of a wall and that one then has two walls perpendicular to the closet on either side (as in the case of the window)

Cabinet under sink

In a kitchen, the extendable rod finds its place in a cabinet under the sink, which makes it possible to hide the storage in the kitchen by giving a touch of charm thanks to the fabric of the curtain (textile is the warm note of a kitchen: curtains, tea towels).

Fitting room

Professionals with a ready-to-wear store can easily set up a fitting room thanks to the extendable rod or a series of fitting rooms by installing partitions and then curtains on rods extendable from one partition to another.

In-room separation

To fragment a space that seems too large and impersonal, or to partition a space that must accommodate several functions, curtains on extendable rods represent a good, effective, inexpensive trick without work.

Thus, from a room, we obtain several, or at least several corners, several atmospheres.

Here are some concrete cases where the extendable rod is used to partition:

In an apartment rented by roommates, if it is necessary to cut a bedroom in two, create a bedroom in the living room, and create a corridor separate from the bedroom when the general circulation of the accommodation necessarily passes through a bedroom.

In a children’s room shared by two children, at first happy to share the space during the first years, but who need more privacy as they grow up.

To create a telecommuting corner in a living room or a primary bedroom, and make it disappear in the evening or on weekends so as not to break the relaxing atmosphere at home!

And still, in other cases, modulating the space with a light partition is very practical.

Bathroom

To make the shower area in a large bathroom more intimate, shared as part of a roommate, or because a large family has to frequent it with several people with sometimes comings and goings, it is possible to use the extendable rod.

When the bathroom has good dimensions, it may accommodate a dressing room or at least many shelves for storing bath linen and hygiene and beauty items. As in the bedroom, we cover it with a large curtain, which is cleaner and more soothing! A good rod resists corrosion and will not be damaged; it remains only to ventilate the room regularly and correctly so that the fabric of the curtains is not deteriorated by stagnant humidity (stains).

How does an extendable rod work?

The extendable curtain pole is self-locking thanks to a powerful compression spring. It has suction cups to cushion contact at both ends and protect materials.

Which curtains does an extendable rod support?

The extendable rod easily carries sheer curtains, standard weight curtains such as plain canvas or printed cotton curtains, but also heavy curtains such as thick jacquard fabrics, velvet curtains, and curtains whose fabric is covered with embroidery over almost the entire surface.

If the curtains are used commonly, that is to say, by pulling without excess to open and close the curtains, there is no particular weight constraint to respect. The rod is well-blocked and will not dislodge.

On the other hand, the extendable rod is not intended to be used as a wardrobe: you should only hang some of your hangers and clothes on it, only one curtain or a pair of curtains.

How to install the extendable curtain rod?

Now let’s see how to install the extendable rod, also called self-locking:

This is to adjust the length of the rod by stretching it from side to side of the walls. Then remove the rod, stretch it 3 to 5cm, and compress the two parts to put it in place.

If the rod has been stretched too much, it is better to dismantle the springs and plates to start over again than to force it.
