The farmers in Mexico were affected negatively by NAFTA. The trade agreement made the US supply lowly priced agricultural products to Mexico. It was achieved because the agricultural products from the US were highly subsidized. Non-farmers preferred buying imported agricultural products because they were at the lower price. Factories in the country were closing because of the cheaply available products from the US. At the same time, industries that depended on local agriculture at that time preferred importing agricultural products because they were cheaper as compared to those grown locally. It ensured that the market for agricultural products had completely deteriorated. Thus, farmers had no source of livelihood.

When the farmers applied to the industrial sector for job seeking, they found that the wages paid were very low. With time, some of the industries that provided employment opportunities for many people went bankrupt because they did not to produce anything since there were readily made products from the United States. It means that people in Mexico became completely dependent on the US in terms of agricultural and manufactured products. Farmers lost jobs or were unable to secure them in the industrial sector. Therefore, they were left with one option to choose, which was to move to the United States where they would secure jobs and get support for their families.

Considering the bad events back at home, the Mexicans were willing to risk their lives and move to the United States illegally where they hoped to secure well-paid jobs. Even though the jobs did not pay well, they would at least provide for their families. Even though some Mexicans arrived in the US and got low-paid jobs, they informed their friends back at home about the matter and it led to increased illegal immigration.
