MLA Essay Format

Description of most popular essay format

The Modern Language Association created the MLA style. It is used by all disciplines, especially humanities, and it is still very popular. MLA style is often preferred by teachers to be used by their students. It has clear, simple rules to follow and does not require extraneous inclusions that are often not necessary for school papers. MLA does not require a title page, as opposed to APA and Chicago styles. A header is required in the upper left corner of the page.

MLA style does not have any requirements regarding how to write an essay. However, an MLA format essay will usually follow the standard essay format. This includes an introduction (ending in a thesis statement), several paragraphs and a conclusion.

One of the best things about MLA citations is that all references are formatted the same. This guide will show you how to cite any source using MLA format. Here are some MLA format essay rules that you should remember when citing works.

  • Your last paper should have the works cited page.
  • The page should be double-spaced. It should also include your last name and page number in the running header.
  • It should start with "Works Cited" at top of page, center.
  • Your works cited should follow the order of the first word in the citation.
