Improper Documentation

Along with the application form N1 or N2 (if applicable), you must submit multiple documents proving your capability to live comfortably in Malta.

The list of the required documents is:

  • Passport with at least two blank pages
  • A letter of intent stating what is your motivation to visit Malta
  • Bank statement of the previous three months stating that you have the required funds in your bank account to support you and your family members in Malta.
  • An updated Curriculum Vitae stating your academic qualifications and work timeline.
  • Proof of accommodation, including hotel bookings or a host's invitation letter.
  • Proof of employment
  • Valid health insurance that covers your entire duration of stay in Malta.
  • A police conduct certificate stating that you are an upstanding citizen.

Despite the clear list of documents to submit, many applicants either omit the documents or make a mistake in submitting the correct information. This is the most common reason for visa rejection for many applicants every year.

Not Sufficient Income

If you are a new applicant, you should know that the income requirements for the Malta digital nomad visa have been updated. You require €42000 annual gross income now for applying for the visa. Before 1st April 2024, the minimum requirement was €32400. For those who applied before 1st April 2024, the income requirements stand at €32400.

The purpose of furnishing bank statements and proof of employment is to ascertain that you have sufficient balance. However, many applicants fail to do so.

Ensure that you either have the required balance in your account or you have proof of income more than the required average.

Inadequate Proof of Remote Work

The Malta digital nomad visa is not a tourist visa. It is a work visa that allows you to work remotely from Malta, earning the required monthly average income. Thus, you must submit a valid proof of remote work with the documents.

Note that a Maltese employer is not acceptable. A certificate from your employer stating that you can work remotely from the company is acceptable. You should have remote clients and a valid work contract if you are a freelancer.

If you don’t have enough remote work or no proof of the same, the visa is bound to get rejected.

Not Applying at The Right Time

The processing time for a Malta digital nomad visa is 60 days from the date of paying the application fee. Sometimes, it might take more. So, one must plan accordingly and apply at the right time. Consider all the factors and timelines before booking your tickets and making hotel accommodations. Applying too early or too late is a grave mistake that you should avoid.

Not Having Adequate Health Insurance

This is a common condition of digital nomad visas that the applicants must secure health insurance covering their entire duration in the country. Malta requires the same. Many applicants fail to get the right insurance or submit policies that do not meet Malta's coverage requirements. Always research and choose the right insurance that meets the Malta government’s requirements.

Inconsistent Information

Ensuring that all your documents are correctly assembled and display the same information is vital. Inconsistent information across the different documents is another reason for application rejection. Mismatched details—such as differing addresses or employment terms—can raise red flags with immigration officers.

Passport Validity

Did you check the validity of your passport before applying for the visa?

This is a simple mistake that is often overlooked at the time of application but comes out as a major hindrance.

Malta requires that your passport is valid during the entire duration of your digital nomad visa. So, check your passport validity before applying.

Endnote

When the department rejects your visa, they state the reason. Sometimes, they are very silly, like some of the reasons discussed above. An expiring passport, no health insurance, no proof of work, inconsistent information, etc., should not hinder your application process.

Read all the information correctly, gather all the documents as specified in the list, fill out the application form, and check everything twice before submitting the application for your Malta digital nomad visa. Read the blog again, and do not make these common mistakes.
