A bathtub filled with warm water is a luxury that we all enjoy. Immersing in it and relaxing for some time makes us relax. It is a wonderful feeling until we have to clean it after us. Or deal with the fact that from now on we will have to use a dirty and unhygienic bathtub. Bathtubs need regular cleaning and sanitising.
Because of the settled dirt, oil, soap etc, mere rinsing of the bathtub will not help us make it clean and hygienic.
If it is too much of a task, try taking help from a professional cleaning service. Most of them are affordable and friendly.
Cleaning your Bathtub
First, try to understand how dirty your bathtub is before thinking of methods to make it clean. It is important to know what kind of cleaning is required. Inspect the bathtub and identify the type of stains, mould, grime, discolouration and the general condition of the surface.
If we have not used it for a long time, there might be a dull, translucent layer that will need extra effort and skill. Make sure that there is no presence of fungus or any other types of infection.
General Bathtub Cleaning
Use hot water to rinse the whole surface. If you have a shower with a running hot water supply, make use of it. Or get hot water from an external source and use it to treat the surface.
Sprinkle baking soda on a damp tub, in a bucket of hot water mix liquid detergent and swirl the water with a long-handled brush. Use a semi-hard nylon brush, dampen it using the cleaning solution and scrub the tub to effectively remove the grime. Continuously wet with soap water and keep scrubbing the surface for better effect.
Rinse the tub intermittently. This will help us spot areas that we missed. Attend those parts as we have done so far. To conclude, get a fresh supply of soapy water and go through a final round of scrubbing.
Repeat the same process for shower fixtures and bathtub exterior.
Rinse the whole area we worked on to remove traces of the cleaning solution. Use a clean, soft towel and wipe the interior and exterior of the tub dry.
Removing Moulds from Bathtub
Mould and mildew are often caused by lack of cleaning, poor ventilation and humidity. Bathtub, Walls, sinks everywhere might get a mould buildup. Mould can have a negative impact on health and should be attended to promptly.
Wear proper protective gear and fully open windows and doors for proper ventilation. Use a mixture of 4 tablespoons of bleach and one litre of hot water. Stir well and use the mixture in a spray bottle.
Spray on the mouldy areas and let it soak for twenty minutes. Wipe the mould using a non-abrasive mould. Make sure that you rinse the cleaning tool at intervals.
Rinse the tub and try the general cleaning process.
Cleaning Hard Water Stains in Bathtub
Hard water is water with a higher concentration of minerals. Mainly Calcium and Magnesium. The residue makes the bathtub look stained and dirty. An easy method to prevent these stains and discolouration is to rinse the tub after bathing.
Mix white vinegar and warm distilled water in equal parts and apply to the affected area. Wipe using a non-abrasive scrubber dipped in the cleaning solution. Make quick successive swipes.
Sanitising the Bathtub
While cleaning is essential, it is equally important to sanitise the bathtub from time to time. A solution with two-part rubbing alcohol and one part water can be used for this purpose. Use the mixture in a spray bottle and shake well before applying. Leave it as such for ten minutes before rinsing off with water. If you don't feel enough confidence to do it yourself you can ask for help from your friends or relatives or hand over the cleaning job to the experts.
