Octreotide acetate is used to treat severe watery diarrhea and sudden redness of the face and neck caused by certain types of tumors commonly found in the intestine and pancreas, such as carcinoid tumors, vasoactive enteropeptide tumors. These symptoms occur when these tumors produce too much of certain natural substances (hormones). The drug works by blocking the production of these hormones. Octreotide helps reduce fluid and mineral loss by reducing watery diarrhea. Octreotide is also used to treat a condition (acromegaly) that occurs when the body produces too much of a natural substance called growth hormone. Treating acromegaly can help reduce the risk of serious problems like diabetes and heart disease. Octreotide's job is to reduce the amount of growth hormone to normal levels. This medicine cannot cure these diseases. The drug is often used in conjunction with other treatments such as surgery, radiation, and other drugs.

The drug is usually administered by subcutaneous injection, usually two to three times a day or as directed by a doctor. Depending on your condition, it may be administered intravenously by a healthcare professional.
