Removal from one place to another is always a serious challenging moment in human life. People mostly try to fit into the new environment, and it often happens that they forget about a previous life. As for me, I try to combine my previous valuable experiences with new aspirations to make my life integral.
My academic history is not a long one. I went to school in Taiwan, where my notes were quite good. I was always interested in foreign languages, world cultures, and communication. Before I had moved to the US, I had a chance to participate in the exchange program that widened my horizons and let me know interesting people with different backgrounds. Then, the American story started for me, as I chose to study communication here. First of all, I was proud of being able to get an education in one of the most spread languages on the planet. Secondly, I could get in touch with a field of knowledge that inspired me. I cannot say that I was the best student in the class because culture shock and some negative attitudes from the side of intolerant people were destabilizing me a bit. Nevertheless, I can call myself hard-working and dedicated to the major I have chosen.
In my opinion, communication seems to be a vitally important major in the modern world. People, who represent totally different religions, cultures, races, nations, and social classes, move from place to place. Thus, the need in the interaction appears. The developed countries, including the USA, face the lack of understanding and respect between social groups. I have experienced bad attitudes from the side of Americans because most of them have prejudices against Asians and do not have any desire to be friends with them. I think that both sides (Americans and Asians) have not enough awareness about the ways of mutual understanding, and conflicts take place just because of human ignorance. I think that professionals who can prevent social conflicts and misunderstandings are extremely needed. Nobody knows if I become such a professional, but I would be really happy to be one. I would like to work in the sphere of public relations or some other field related to this one because I feel that I have enough courage and motivation. As for the necessary knowledge, I plan to get it during my studies at the University of Washington.
Apart from studies, I have been always fond of social activities. This interest has lead me to the international volunteering in 2013. I spent two weeks in Cambodia, helping underprivileged groups of population. I was so astonished and disappointed when I saw that these people do not have the basic conditions for normal living. In other words, they do not own bathrooms, they have financial difficulties to buy food and clothes, and some of them even do not have homes. I joined the team of the non-governmental organization Empowering Lives through Innovative Volunteerism, and participated in the process of houses and bathrooms construction. Apart from this, I also had a chance to do some entertaining works with kids from the orphanage. I feel that volunteering is one of the best ways to keep in touch with people and support them. Therefore, I also joined a school active group after I have come to the US. We visited families from the lower class, sharing food and daily supply with them. I think that gratitude I saw in people's eyes was the most precious present I have ever received.
Apart from studying and volunteering, I am interested in technology. Once, I travelled to Finland to become a part of a Scifest, where I was dealing with questions of creation and functioning of robots. In general, I try to follow last trends in technology because it influences our world. Moreover, and it is useful to know what changes appear after the creation of one or another machine.
Finally, one of my biggest passions is learning foreign languages. I enjoy talking English, and I plan to start with German in the nearest future. I am sure that the more languages we know, the more people we can understand. In my major, i.e. communication, languages are highly valued.
So, I am a young person with own interests and aspirations, but my biggest one is to spread the tolerance, justice, respect, and understanding. People of different professions are needed to complete this mission, and I have approximately found what is my perfect place in this scheme. I have a lot of hopes for the studies at the University of Washington and looking forward to starting them.
