In the midst of an era FIFA 23 marks another year of careful attrition from EA, as several changes to the aesthetics and tactical aspects complement its sturdy gameplay blueprint. It's also a title that feels both anchored and consumed by its Ragnarok status, begrudgingly throwing down a ruby-red curtain as the football game genre is thrown into a tidal wave of chaos.

Theatrical additions to gameplay, like the intense Power Shots will ensure the FIFA name goes out with a bang instead of an eerie whimper. When you hold the bumpers, pressing shoot turns your striker into the ultimate raider, with an interruptible attack, the camera pulling focus while they leather the ball and sends shockwaves from bootstraps blasting through the PS5's controller speaker. If you get the right angle, FIFA 23's newly improved acrobatic goalkeepers might be able to stop it with their own fingers and have been able to save my bacon a few occasions.

Make sure you're doing it correctly, however and if the player has enough room there's a good chance that it'll be in the net's back regardless of how far out you are. This kind of shot can be used to evoke the days of Francesco Totti hit-and-hope long shots as seen in the early years of FIFA But don't panic the online multiplayer game is plagued with speedy wingers passing the ball across the net on breaks. Why try and have fun, eh?

While it's still not going to solve the game's perennial issue of being over-reliant on pacey players all the time, FIFA 23 does reward precision in execution across the board. My fingers hurt from pulling the triggers to jockey dangerous counter-attacks. And the speed of a play has to be tweaked, which can be difficult to master, but it is rewarding when you get that perfect ball through.

Rogue tackles will also make you vulnerable by pressing the buttons that accompany them for too long could result in a risky, crunching commitment that sometimes will pay off but, most of the time it will result in penalties that are a biting blow.
