esRadio started as a radio station in 1937. The first transmitter of RNE was built by Telefunken. It had a broadcasting power of 20 kW. The transmitter was a gift from the Third Reich to Francoist Spain. The transmitter was installed at Arganda del Rey (Madrid) in April 1945. It was less powerful than the transmitter at Palacio de Anaya.

RNE established a network of regional broadcasting centres. These were the bases from which private broadcasters could connect to RNE for news bulletins. During the Second World War, RNE cooperated with Axis powers.

From the 1960s onwards, stereo transmissions were introduced. They provided a better sound quality than the analogica. There were also many new transmission techniques. During this period, RNE's external services underwent a far-reaching reform. They stopped transmitting commercials in their programming. They replaced their programmes with ones in Spanish.

During the 1970s, Tercer Programa was launched in the whole of Spain. It offered educational and cultural programs.
