Elite troops have dubbed the futuristic piece of kit the “Boba Fett helmet” after the Star Wars bounty hunter, who wore a very similar-looking one.But the real thing is even stranger than science fiction, air-conditioned to protect against heat and gases, and with a “friend or foe” device that picks up signals from other wearers.
And if conditions are on the dark side, there is an “infra-red” setting using heat-seeking technology to help the crack troops pinpoint enemies.
The helmet is equipped with a GPS system that can bring maps up on to the visor to help troops check positions. And it has ballistic protection plates that can withstand shots from an AK47 and more powerful weapons, as well as shrapnel, blasts and fire.
Makers claim the Devtac Ronin Kevlar Level IIIA Tactical Ballistic Helmet is the world’s most advanced and “literally bullet-proof”.
Sources say it can even protect soldiers’ heads from a shot by someone firing a Magnum 44 round at them as the bullets will not penetrate the tough protective shell. It was first used by American special forces operators from Army Delta Force and the Navy’s SEALs, and is now being tried out by SAS and SBS soldiers.
A military source told the Daily Mirror: “For years the defence industry has been trying to find a way of protecting the head and this is the next development.
“The helmet, already being used by special forces, is much more versatile than just stopping bullets. It is fitted with the latest communications technology and will help the soldier see the enemy no matter what the circumstances.”
